TORONTO – Some of the most active companies traded Wednesday January 19, 2011 on the Toronto Stock Exchange and the TSX Venture Exchange:
Toronto Stock Exchange (13,439.04 down 120.16 points):
Compton Petroleum Corp. (TSX:CMT). Oil and gas. Up 4.5 cents, or 11.39 per cent, at 44 cents on 24,062,423 shares. The energy sector on the main index was one of the losers, dropping 1.16 per cent as the price of the February contract slipped 52 cents US to $90.86 on the New York Mercantile Exchange.
Eastern Platinum Ltd. (TSX:ELR). Miner. Down seven cents, or 3.85 per cent, at $1.75 on 13,714,731 shares. The metals and mining sector led the decliners on the TSX, falling 2.09 per cent.
Air Canada (TSX:AC.B). Airliner. Down 13 cents, or 3.99 per cent, at $3.13 on 10,230,100 shares.
Uranium One Inc. (TSX:UUU). Miner. Down 31 cents, or 5.41 per cent, at $5.42 on 9,515,717 shares.
Bombardier (TSX:BBD.B). Transportation equipment. Up 11 cents, or 1.94 per cent, at $5.77 on 9,561,428 shares.
Starfield Resources Inc. (TSX:SRU). Miner. Down two cents, or 14.29 per cent, at 12 cents on 9,359,009 shares. The Toronto-based company’s shares declined despite providing “successful” test run of its hydromettalurgical technology at its Ferguson Lake project in Nunavut.
TSX Venture Exchange (2,285.02 down 7.49 points):
Alange Energy Corp. (TSXV:ALE). Oil and gas. Up a penny, or 3.13 per cent, at 33 cents on 17,461,720 shares.
Companies reporting major news:
Loblaw Co. (TSX:L). Retail. Down 67 cents, or 1.69 per cent, at $38.90 on 321,274 shares. The grocery giant’s clothing label Joe Fresh says it plans to open four new stand-alone stores this spring, three in the Toronto area and one outside of Calgary.
Teck Resources (TSX:TCK.B). Miner. Down $1.48, or 2.32 per cent, at $62.36 on 2,269,821 shares. The Vancouver-based company said it expects its coal sales to range between five million and 5.5 million tonnes in the first quarter, little changed from the year before.
NuLoch Resources Inc. (TSXV:NLR). Oil and gas. Down $1.48, or 2.32 per cent, at $62.36 on 2,269,821 shares. The Calgary-based oil and gas producer will be acquired by Magnum Hunter Resources Corp. (NYSE:MHR), a Houston-based company which focuses on unconventional shale properties, for US$327 million. The boards of both companies have already approved the agreement.
Viterra Inc. (TSX:VT). Grain handler and farm supplier. Up 54 cents, or 5.13 per cent, at $11.07 on 8,463,987 shares. The farm services company said its profit margins for 2011 will be in a range of $33 to $36 per tonne of grain handled, up from $30 to $33 per tonne last year. It earned $52.7 million in the fourth quarter, reversing a loss of $900,000 the year before while revenues climbed 38 per cent.
CGI Group Inc. (TSX:GIB.A). Information technology. Up 13 cents, or 0.71 per cent, at 0.71 per cent, at $18.55 on 852,474 shares after the Montreal company announced it won an US$8 million contract to deliver electronic health record payment services to the Texas Health and Human Services Commission.
